During one of our Pastoral Care Sessions last term we ventured into the Home Ec Centre. Our task was to divide into groups of 3 and to make sausage rolls. The task was twofold – provide an opportunity to work in groups and to dtermine whether we would make more sausage rolls as a fundraiser for the Transition Trip in  2008.

We were given a short demonstration on how to make them. Following this we collected our ingredients and commenced the production of our sausage rolls. We soon discovered that it wasn’t as easy as it looked – some of us knew what to do whilst others had no real kitchen experience.

By asking others questions and observing what they were doing, most groups  were well on the way to completing the required task. Each group member was required to complete certain tasks – if they didn’t it meant that the  others in the group had to do more work. The sharing of the workload was emphasised by each of the group members.

Making the sausage rolls wasn’t the only task that had to be completed. There was also the washing and drying up, cleaning the floor and bench top areas, putting utensils away and putting the aprons/tea towels and dish cloths in the washing machine.

We enjoyed the experience, especially the eating of the sausage rolls!!

During the final week of Semester 1 Year 10 students were involved in a Work Placement with local employers. Students were placed in a wide range of employment fields—hair stylists, plumbers, electricians, aged care workers, child care workers, painters, mechanics, aquaculture, retail, builders and others too numerous to mention. The school sincerely thanks all employers who willingly took on a Work Experience student during this  week.

The purpose of the Work Experience Programme is to allow our Senior Secondary students to get a taste of careers they may like to pursue when they leave school. Students are encouraged to try a range of career options in the programme which is offered at Year 10 and Year 11. Students in Year 10 complete 2 one week placements, whilst our Year 11’s complete a 1 week placement in Adelaide as a part of the Transition Trip.

Through this programme it is hoped that students can make an informed decision about their future career pathway. Students gain an understanding about what is involved in a number of careers and are able to determine whether that field of employment is suitable for them. It is also provides a link between what they are doing at school and how these skills are utilised in the work place. Students also gain an insight into what subjects they may need to select in their Senior Years of school if they wish to pursue particular career paths.
